jeux du ciel
french for 'games of the sky.'
(there is always something else going on)
i got this tattoo when i was 22 on st, marks place across from the legendary kim's video music when it was there, one of my haunts forever, it shall never die.
i was lucky to live in a tiny apt in this neighborhood after 9/11 before money corrupted my beloved nyc even further. r.i.p. old school east village.
at the time i was finishing my philosophy thesis for college entitled "wittgenstein's prescription; on certainty and contradiction." wittgenstein is a famous philosopher of language and mathematical logic who was actually really a mystic, and very misunderstood. the tattoo is partly a nod to wittgenstein's notion of 'language games,' in the sense that 'the world,' as we know and experience it, can only scientifically and logically be reduced to the use of language, from which there is no escape. what can we truly be certain of, really? subjective experience. wittgenstein proved, using gödel's proof among other endless logical elucidations, that subjective experience is a true reality which cannot be refuted by any scientist or logician. this further proves that 'there is always something else going on.'

he became a hero of mine because though he was a philosophical genius, his epistemology (the study of what can be known) was actually an occult mystic spiritual metaphysics (the study of what there is). he literally proved the limitations of science and logic, with logic. he is like a chess virtuoso who could beat any chess player at chess, with chess, by proving that chess is an illusion (by the lights of the rules of chess).

as a musician and artist this has had a profound impact on me. it means that music and art is without question as important__and in some ways more significant__than science. we live in a culture that worships logic, but doesn't really understand it. one day, art will rule the world, and science will worship art. for this reason, (and 11 years of study of vedanta and the tradition of kashmir shaivism__) creativity is my religion. my study of philosophy included analytic philosophy, logic + mathematical logic, phenomenology and existential thought, philosophy of art and aesthetics, postmodernism and deconstruction, but at the end of the day, wtf do i know, seriously, other than a lot, and a whole lot of nothing. in the music, in the sky___ there is always something else going on. (and listening to music is the thing that truly made the philosophy thesis). MUSIC IS A SAVIOR. and as my friend koen named his art studio, BEAUTY IS A SAVIOR.
...and it's also just a tattoo on my left arm or whatever.
